Cleaning your hot tub’s filter is very important. There is some debate about how often you should clean your filters out. Some companies say you should pull your filters and clean them weekly. Some companies say you should pull your filters out and clean them monthly. I believe it’s best to clean them out monthly. One thing is for sure, get yourself a good, strong spray nozzle for your garden hose!

When your filters filter, the holes in the paper media collect all the debris you want filtered out of your hot tub. That’s why you need to pull your filters out and spray them off periodically. If you pull your filters out weekly and spray them off, you’ll see some stuff come out of them. However, if you pull your filters out once a month, you’ll really see lots of stuff get rinsed out.
Weekly vs Monthly:
As I see it, it comes down to one simple fact: The longer you go between cleaning your filters, the better filtration you’re going to get. What that means is, as the holes in your hot tub filters fill in, they get smaller. In one week’s time, they get a little smaller. After 4 weeks, they get quite a bit smaller. If you want to filter out smaller stuff, naturally you’ll want smaller holes. That’s what waiting 4 weeks to clean your filters does. It allows your filters to filter out the really small stuff.
How often should you replace your filters?
That’s a good question! I’m glad you asked. As with so many things now-a-days, you’ll want to consider cost. If you get your filters from your local hot tub place, you’re spending too much. (Sorry, not sorry local hot tub places. Stop price gouging.) I know people that replace them annually, which I think is a good idea. I have also seen people with filters that are a few years old. Technically they still work, but I mean, gross.

Most importantly, get your filters from SpaDepot.com. You’ll get the same filters made by the same manufacturers, but they’re half the price. Not only do they make it simple to find your filters by measurements, but they also make it even easier to find them by the type of hot tub you have. Their database is vast. Even though the hot tub industry keeps growing, it’s nearly complete. I should know, I worked on it for many years! See for yourself, here’s the link:
Should you use a filter cleaner?
Sure. That’s the simple answer. I am a big fan of eco-TUB Filter Spray Cleaner because it’s easy. Eco-TUB Filter Soak and Power Soak are great products if you prefer the soaking method. Here are the links if you would like to try them:
