Yes, you really do. First and foremost, picture your hot tub like an appliance. If you maintain it properly, it will last much, much longer. Then, think of the old adage “water is destructive, just look at the Grand Canyon!” That’s very true. Over time, water is going to destroy things. Your hot tub won’t last as long as it took for the Colorado River to carve out the Grand Canyon, but you still want it to last as long as possible.
When you fill your hot tub up with either tap water or well water, that water should be good to go out of the gate. Meaning, the pH and alkalinity should be inline. Sometimes you may need to increase the hardness (calcium), or remove metals, but usually it’s in great shape. Over time, as you’re using your hot tub and adding chemicals, particulates build up in your hot tub water. I like to picture water in your hot tub and the accumulation of particulates like paper. When you first fill your tub, that’s like regular old paper. Like the paper you would put in your printer. As time goes on, that paper turns into sandpaper. First, it’s 1,000 grit, then 600, then 250, 125, 80, 50…….you get the idea. The more particulates in your water, the more corrosive the water is.

Do I need to drain my hot tub more often than every 3 months?
Probably not, I use my hot tub daily, and I have it drained and cleaned every 3 months. It’s been working great for 6 years now.
In addition to draining and cleaning your hot tub every 3 months, I strongly recommend using our chlorine only system. You can check it out here –

Using the chlorine only system is not only simple, it’s also the least expensive system there is. If you drain and clean your hot tub every 3 months, and use the chlorine system, you never have to test your pH and alkalinity. Don’t believe me? Check out the link above!
I hope this information helps. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us!
