I use my hot tub daily, and when you use something every day it’s easy to take care of it. Most people don’t use their hot tub daily. Additionally, we all have busy lives and taking care of the water in your hot tub may not be at the top of your priority list. Not taking proper care of your hot tub can lead to a number of problems, and one of the more common problems is usually called White Water Mold.

White Water Mold or Hot Tub Flakes are usually white or yellow. There can be lots or just a few. It looks and acts like little bits of tissue paper. If you pick up a piece and rub it together in your fingers, it will fall apart and disappear. The reason you have it boils down to one fact: You didn’t use enough sanitizer. Whether you had a couple of hectic weeks and forgot about the tub, or you went on vacation, the only way you’re going to get it is if not enough sanitizer was used. By the time you see it, the mold has already built up inside your tub’s plumbing. You can drain, clean and refill your hot tub as many times as you like, but unless you use the proper treatment it will never go away.

TREATMENT:
In my experience the treatment is easy, but it will take some time. You’ll need to super chlorinate your water with granular chlorine for two weeks and add Scum Buster weekly. Those are only two products you need, granular chlorine and Scum Buster.

I’ve seen some other blogs that use ratios like 5 tablespoons per 100 gallons, but based on my experience you don’t need to go overboard like that. 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons is plenty.
Add 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons every 3 days and do this for 2 weeks. For most hot tubs that’s going to be 3-4 tablespoons. In addition, add Scum Buster to your hot tub based on the directions on the bottle. For most tubs that’s going to be 1-4 cup per week. Your hot tub is going to smell like chlorine during this process, and it’s best not to use it. Even if you don’t have a sensitivity to chlorine, that’s a lot of chlorine and your skin probably wouldn’t like it.
That’s really it! After 2 weeks pull out your filter and spray / rinse it off thoroughly. There is no need to drain and refill after this process. Since chlorine works quickly and goes away quickly, a few days after your last heavy chlorine dose your hot tub is ready to go. If you prefer to drain, clean and refill your tub after this process, be sure to give the chlorine a few days to dissipate so you don’t kill any grass or shrubbery when you drain it.
I recommend using the bottle of Scum Buster until it’s empty. That’s good stuff! Also, using the whole bottle will help get rid of anything else in your hot tub’s water that you don’t want in there.
